Everything Guitar - Guitar World - Vai's 30 Hour Workout, etc bhuether - Apr 06, 2004 - 03:59 PM Post subject: Guitar World - Vai's 30 Hour Workout, etc
I got such a kick out of Vai's 30 Hour Workout. Throughout the piece, he makes these subtle jabs at pop music. I think he realizes his workout is way beyond what a vast majority of today's pop, rock, and metal players can handle. But I think he is reaching out to the aspiring players, trying to give them ambitious goals to reach for (sort of like what this site is all about!).
I also got a kick out of a short piece on some guitar player whose name and band have already escaped me. It says something about how he is a minimalist player who never plays a solo. The guitarist talks about how he doesn't like to play a lot of chords and that sometimes he will play only 2 notes in a song because that is what fits. Hey, I guess we all have to believe whatever is necessary to face ourselves in the mirror. If this site is about nothing else, it is about trying to instill a philosophy that goes 180 degrees against what that guy says in that Guitar World piece.
Sorry about the rant. I just got a kick out of some of the pieces in that Guitar World issue. Good reading. Pick it up the next time you see it on a magazine stand.

hey, I have that issue! Still didn't get around to doing a 30 hour workout. To be honest I don't think I can handle it - I tried doing the 10 hour thing, and after 4th hour my fingers felt like they were about to fall off!
