Hey all, fresh newbie here. My playing styles are somewhere between Neal Shon,Gary Moore and Slash. When there is an open mic. situation or a party jam they always put me on last.Guitarists that I envy tell me I shred when in reality I may wail with inspiration but, without proper training.People say that I play with feel and excitement while guitarists point out that my blues/rock lead patterns are spirited but theory and finger excercises may be in order to attain the next level of true shred technique. Here is my problem:I don't read music(none)and I find metronomes boring to the point of irritation.Still,I need to break out of my current style limitations.Whats a rocker to do?

lol yeah man, rockers practice a lot usually, unless they've got a pretty face or a pretty freakish show.

ay man, wateva chords and riffs sound good 2 u, go ahead wit it! let your heart and fingers play the music for you and let it loose! dont worry about wat other people think. just try 2 sound like you. thats all i have 2 say.

I am grateful for your words of wisdom.I thought I needed new technique but have dicovered expressivity is the way for me.My hat's off to the more technically skilled guitarist's but the mechanics of playing will be taking a back seat for now. Thanks for the cool advice, best of luck to you.

Learn to read music. It won't hurt your style as many non-readers love to say. Learn as much theory as you can as well. That will help you think more in line with other more advanced players. Finally, keep on developing your technique. Over time (with lots of practice) you will emerge. Everything you put into your development will eventually come out in your playing. Lets just hope it's before you're old and dated.
