To find a good teacher in your area, contact schools, music stores and your friends who are taking music lessons. Even if you know someone who is taking flute lessons, her/his flute teacher may know a good guitar teacher.
A person does not have to have any kind of license or training to become a guitar teacher, so be careful: shop around, take trial lessons (which you usually do have to pay for) and ask a lot of questions.
Suggested Questions:
1. What is your education background?
2. How many students do you currently teach?
3. Where do you teach?
4. What is your cancellation policy?
5. How long have you been a guitar teacher?
6. What musical style(s) do you teach?
7. What do you charge?
8. How long is each lesson?
9. May I see a copy of your syllabus?
10. May I contact 2 of your curent students?
By asking the prospective teacher to answer these questions, you can get a feel for the person and her/his teaching style. Remember that even though this person knows more about guitar than you do, she/he should be happy to answer questions for you, without making you feel bad for not knowing or understanding something.
Watch out for lazy teachers!
I do have one final suggestion regarding teachers: If a teacher consistently asks you, what YOU want to do for the lesson - this means that the teacher does not have a plan for you, and you are not going to improve very fast or reach your full potential. Remember that you can find another teacher at any time.
