Everything Guitar - What do you think?

Okay, it's like this: I'm pushing 40 and I'm thinking about trying to play lead guitar. Is this crazy? I don't that much about music. I've been playing for about 30 years, everything I know is from ear and watching others. I'm a ryhthm guitar player in a band. I know all my barre chords and full chords including minors, sus, and dim. . More times than not I'm showing our lead guitarist where they're going in a solo that we are covering. I do this by ear. I've just never been in the mood to try until now.

Am I too old to start?

If I do try, where would I start?

What do you think?

I say go for it. If you have a good ear then you will just need to learn how to map ideas in your head to the fretboard. Good lead players can usually envision a riff in their head and play it on the fretboard.

To play what is in your head and to play along to chords, etc you need to master your scales. Some lead players say they never learned scales. Of course I don't believe it. Whether you learn scales formally or just learn where on the fretboard the notes sound 'right', the end result is that you know scales on the fretboard.

Thanks Brian, I have already started with the major scale and getting pretty smooth with it.
I'm assuming that with legato and alternate picking practice my speed will pick up.
This web site helps tremendously, thanks alot.
