| Hey, great site by the way. I've been working on the first exersize in the Alternet Picking lesson for a few days now. Until now, I've been gradually building speed without much problem. Now, whats happening is that when I cross over to the e string, I am muting the string as I pick it. I think either my fretting hand or picking hand is going ahead of the other one. Should I just continue to practise, or am I doing something wrong? |

The muted note leads me to believe that you are picking the note before you have fully fretted it. So slow it down til you have proper synchronization.

hi guys, i'm also new here to this site, it's a great site.. just a quick Q on the Alternate picking, i've onlt tried it for a few hours today, and i can play alot faster than the slow demo's, but i'm still behind on the medium and fast demo's, also getting a pain in the thumb(fret side)... is that the norm huh??
well, i'm hope i get this picking thingy working right, i have already noticed an increase in my speed after this very short time.. |

If you don't already, you should stretch your hands for a few minutes before playing. Bend your wrist back, bend your fingers back in pairs of two, then bend each one separately. Go through that process a few times then jump into the exercise.
later,

Play everything slowly, precisely and with a metrnonome.
I could never stress enough how important it is to play with a click. Not only will the speed with which you play increase quicker than practicing without it, it will also help give you a good sense of time which, honestly, most rock guitar players lack. |
