I really know nothin about music theory i have vague concepts about it but how exactly do you determine what key a song is in ? Also does determining the key of the song help when it comes to trying to write a solo on it. the only thing i know about soloing is what i notice through kirk hammett and other such role models of mine how they play in the same positions on the fret board anyone whou could break this down for me in simple terms id much appreiciate it.

I figure out the key by just playing notes that 'blend' with the music and then I take note of what major scale the notes are from.
