Hello, I find holding the pick with the flat of my index finger and my thumb is the best way for me.I know that a lot of people hold it with the side of the index but when I try that I can't play a note that sounds any good.I'm not saying that way is wrong but it don't seem right for me.I believe the way I hold it is called the Benson grip which leads to a rotational wrist movement when playing as opposed to a transitional movement when pick is held with the side of the index.I have reached reasonable picking speed with this technique but not as quick as Brian.Does anybody think I should try and change the way I hold my pick or stick with what I'm doing? Thanks for any help.
Jimmy.

Playing with the side of your index finger will give you more speed and also be good for pinch harmonics.

Thanks for your reply mate.I have tried holding the pick with the side of my index for the last few weeks and it has made a big difference in my picking speed. It was worth changing my grip after all.It took a bit of getting used to though.
