Post subject: Could someone please help teach me some theory...  PostPosted: Jan 25, 2007 - 01:52 AM

The first time i ever played guitar was in grade 9 guitar class at my highschool. I had a very crappy guitar teacher in a sense of teaching theory. I have tought myself a lot on the guitar since then, but have found that i can only really use the pentatonic minor or blues scales to play leads (since i love to play the blues). I would like to broaden my leads and be able to "speak" more fluently with my guitar. I have been browsing through your site in the past couple days, and already have learned a lot of scales (specifically the diatonic scales and modes and the jazz melodic minor scale). I find that scales are easy to learn for me but what to do with them i have trouble with. I think you are an exellent teacher and guitar player, and i was wondering if you could maybe muster up some theory lessons (for instance the circle of 5ths and what that means...lol), or if not, maybe direct me to where i can find some good theory. That would be much appreciated. By the way this is a wicked site and already have told some friends about it.

Thanks

Glad you like the site. Since it would take me a while to come up with a good theory lesson, I would just go on google. You can easily find theory lessons. But my advice is learn the scales to the point where when your fingers touch the fretboard, your hands are automatically 'speaking' with the scales. I never apply theory when I play. I just trust my fingers and ears...

later,

brian

You might invest in a book on music music theory and harmony to upgrade your understanding of music in general. You can purchase textbooks ( older editions ) and other learning material of this sort very cheaply off auction sites like eBay and others. A better understanding of the fundamental topics of theory will give you a broader understanding and appreciation of music ( especially if your playing something classical or something like that... )

There's a great book called Jazz Theory and Practice, by Richard Lawn and Jeffrey Helmer. You can find it on Amazon, IF you want to get serious! There's a 3 year learning curve on music theory - might as well get on it if you really want it.
