Post subject: Reading Sheet Music For Guitar

| Whats the best way to learn to read standard sheet music for guitar? I've read that learning to read in position is a common way to do this , but are there other methods. Because of the patterns of octaves and unisons on the fret board this is somewhat confusing for me. Thanks for any advice... |

Brian, I see on your gear page that you have a Dimarzio Tone Zone pickup in the bridge of one of your guitars.Could you tell me how you rate it as I was thinking of changing the bridge humbucker on my Musicman silhouette special to either the Tone Zone or the Air Zone. I have been told they are similar but the Air Zone sounds more vintage.

I really like the Tone Zone. It is very harmonically rich sounding and produces great articulation.

Yeah thanks for that, can you remember which recordings you used it on? The Air zone has very good reviews so I might end up going for that. The humbucker in the musicman just doesn't quite do it for me, theres no sustain with it, great guitar though, it plays like a dream.

Start simple. Get some easy beginner books (without TAB!) from Mel Bay or whoever, and practice reading in first position. Practice reading single line melodies until it's easy, and then go on to harder stuff. Reading music fluently is a skill that requires lots of practice. You have to make your own decisions about how to deal with the confusing patterns on the fingerboard - that's just part of the deal. Knowing your scales in all keys really helps. But just practicing reading for hours on end is the necessary thing. Keep a couple of sharp pencils on the music stand and make little tic marks in the sheet music every four measures. Then read just four measures at a time, and repeat them at least five times in a row before going on to the next four measures. Otherwise you won't remember anything you have learned. If you just read all the way through from beginning to end it's a waste of learning and practice time. |
