Everyone knows there is no formula for writing songs. Oh but wait a minute - then what is pop? Ok, must of the music that we guitar players respect does not follow a formula. But there are still guidelines that can help the inspiring writer. So let's use this forum to go over general practices. We can talk about stuff like how to make smooth key changes, what software to use for backing track composition, use of chord substitution to liven songs up, etc, etc, etc.

And as with the other forums, if someone posts something that we deem as really excellent, then I will add the content to the website in some appropriate place (or create a new place!).

later,

Brian

Lately I have gone through somewhat of an explosion with songwriting and can tell you what did it for me. I picked up a couple books on jazz as well as Al Dimeola"s Guide to Chords, Scales, and Arpeggios. Doing these things has helped me develop a pretty impressive chord vocabulary and has made songwriting such a breeze. Now when I pick up my guitar, a new song idea emerges almost instantly. In a way it is a distraction because I am always trying to work on one song at a time. So now I actually have to try and prevent myself from getting song ideas. Ironic... Anyway, perhaps a similar approach would work for you.
