Post subject: How long does this sweep picking thing take?  PostPosted: Sep 27, 2003 - 08:13 PM

Ok,i've been playing guitar for many many years now(self taught),but i've only been seriously in to learning sweep picking for about the past 3 months or so.To be honest,my sweep skills are horrible! and its driving me crazy.

I've been using all the arpeggio exersizes off this site(great site btw)and i've noticed a very very slight improvement than when i first started sweep picking but thats it.I have NO speed, and when i do sweep even a simple scale it sounds very rough, mechanical and un-even.

I've tried everything from how i hold the guitar,to holding the pick.I play very lightly.I spend atleast 1 solid hour on sweep picking alone each day,and im starting very slow to get the uniform of things down, and then very slowly increasing speed but no matter what,it still sounds bad.

What am i missing here?there's gotta be something besides practicing ALOT(which i already do every single day).Is it gunna take 10 years before i can sweep even 1/16th as fast as someone like Malmsteen(btw im not learning sweep picking to be like malmsteen either, this is something i want to do for me)....

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me figure out whatever im missing...Thanks Smile.

Sweep picking is one of those things that is very tough to describe in words. Maybe you need to sit down with someone who can show you. Or get a video that covers that technique (among others). That's all I can suggest for now.

later,

brian

Thanks,i was talking with one of the local music teachers earlier today and i got a chance to show him how i was trying to learn sweep picking. And he pretty much told me that most of it came from my picking hand alone. He mentioned that my fretting hand has the speed but the problems were in my wrist and the way i held the pick.

He showed me about three different ways one could go about it,and luckily i found one that actually helps! It's gunna take alot of (you guessed it!!!!)practice(!)but its kind of like the block has been moved!!!

My skills are still pretty bad but i do think there's some hope! Very Happy

Thanks again!

Like you said, getting someone to show you something is often the best way around it. My second guitar teacher showed me how to sweep pick; before, I didn't have a hope in hell of doing it right, now, I'm pretty bad, but I'm better at it. What licks are you trying to play with sweeping?

It might even be something really simple you're doing wrong. Like, my guitar teacher (again) taught me how to play this lick that I was struggling with:

E|---------12-------
B|------------15p12
G|14b(16)----------

And you know what I was doing 'wrong'? Playing the bend with my third finger. I tried it with by middle finger, and I can play that now (If I do say so myself) pretty damn fast. Smile.

Wow, long post, I started to ramble....but the general idea......someone showing you can help no end!
